久しぶりに映画をじっくり見てしまった。NHKのBSプレミアムが放送したエル・シドである。
この映画は１９６１年に制作されており、当時最盛期にあったハリウッドが金に糸目をつけずに制作した大作だ。
私はこの映画を高校一年生の時に、親戚がいた福岡の天神の大劇場で見たが、度肝を抜かされた。
キリスト教徒とムスリムが戦う戦闘シーンの大迫力や、騎士同士が一対一で戦う場面などが目に焼き付いたが、しかしこの映画の時代背景については当時は少しも分からなかった。
注）ベン・ハーの制作は１９５９年だからこのころがハリウッドの最盛期だったことが分かる。
この映画はレコンキスタを扱っているのだが、レコンキスタとはムスリム（イスラム）勢力に侵略されていたスペインの国土をキリスト教徒が奪還する運動で、８世紀から１５世紀まで約８００年続いた闘争だ。
だがその内容は純粋にキリスト教徒とイスラム教徒との戦いではなく、互いに合従連衡していたので、当時は何が何だかわからなかっただろう。
この映画の主人公のエル・シドが活躍したのは１１世紀で、当時はキリスト教徒の王国がスペイン北部に、一方南部には多くのムスリム系の王国があって、ちょうど日本の戦国時代のような状況だったと思えばいい。
エル・シドはスペイン文学の叙事詩「わがシッドの歌」でうたわれた英雄だが実在の人物でもある。日本でいえばヤマトタケルと義経をミックスしたような人物だ。
伝説と実在が入り乱れているが、エル・シドが民衆のアイドルであったことは間違いなく、騎士として最高の栄誉と、あたるところ敵なしの活躍に国王以上の称賛がエル・シドに向けられた。
このことがカステーリャ国王アルフォンソ６世に疎まれ、何度も追放の憂き目にあっているが、戦争になると常に呼び戻されて軍の指揮を任されている。
「あいつは嫌な奴だが、戦争になるとめっぽう強いから必要人物だ」ということだろう。
注）エル・シドはアルフォンソ６世の騎士でカスティーリャ国一番の剣客だった。
エル・シドを演じたのは当時最高の人気俳優だったチャールトン・ヘストンでその妻のヒメナを演じたのがソフィア・ローレンだった。
ソフィア・ローレンが演じたヒメナは絶世の美女という想定で、エル・シド以外にもヒメナのために死んでもいいと思うような騎士もいたが、当時私はソフィア・ローレンが少しも美しいとは思わなかった。
「なんでこんな目と唇が馬鹿でかい女性が美しいのだろうか、ひどいミスキャストでアメリカ人の美意識はどうかしているのではないか・・・・・・・」
その後私は西欧人の顔を見慣れてきてソフィア・ローレンが美しく見えるようになったが、あの時の違和感は今も記憶に残っている。
私はソフィア・ローレンを見ることで「美意識とは場所と時代で変わるものだ」ということを知らされた。
それにしてもレコンキスタとはよく言ったものだ。もともとスペインはローマ帝国の領土（その前はカルタゴ）で、その後ゲルマン人の侵入でローマが崩壊し西ゴート王国ができたが、それをウマイヤ朝（ムスリム）が滅ぼしてイスラム国家に変えた。
その後８００年間スペインはキリスト教徒とムスリムのモザイク国家になり、最終的にキリスト教徒がモスレムの最後の拠点グラナダを陥落させて、１４９２年にレコンキスタは完了したことになっている。
しかしイスラム教徒の立場から言うとローマ帝国と同じぐらい長くイスラムがスペインを支配していたのだから、ここはもともとイスラムの領土であるという主張も成り立ちそうだ。
だから領土問題などは過去のある時期をとらえて自分の領土などと言っても仕方がない代物で、現状を追認するのがもっとも妥当な措置で、どうしても領土にするのならば戦争に訴えるより方法はない。
およそ４０年の歳月を経てエル・シドをじっくりと見たのだが、当時のアメリカの国力がこうした大作を作らせていたことをしみじみと認識させられた。

Watching movies "El Cid," "I have seen first time in 40 years"
